How CBD can help with fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia increases the sensation of pain and decreases quality of life by affecting the way the brain and spinal cord process pain signals.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterised by musculoskeletal pain, which is often accompanied by fatigue and sleep problems as well as forgetfulness and mood swings. It is a degenerative disease.

The symptoms usually appear after an event, such as:

  • Physical trauma.
  • surgery
  • Infection.
  • Significant psychological stress.
  •  In other cases, symptoms may accumulate over time, and none of the above may be present.

Many people with fibromyalgia also have:

  • Tension headaches.
  • Temporomandibular joint disorders.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

All these ailments are consequences of the disease. However, they are not specific to fibromyalgia, as people are also affected psychologically.

What factors influence the disease?

The factors that predispose to a greater likelihood of being a fibromyalgia patient are:

  • Female sex : Women are more likely than men to develop fibromyalgia.
  • Family history: Family history is important, as it is an inherited disease.
  • Chronic pain: If a person already has a disease such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, they are much more likely to suffer from fibromyalgia.
  • What diet improves the general condition of people with fibromyalgia?

The first step to take if we want to take care of our diet, would be to go to a dietician who will give us the exact guidelines for our body. As they say “Every body is different”.

But if we really want to start taking care of our diet, these are the ingredients that cannot be missing so that you can control your weight and consume natural products without additives:

  • Vegetables.
  • Fresh fruit.
  • Natural nuts.
  • Wholegrain cereals.
  • Unprocessed pulses.
  • Fresh fish.
  • Fresh meat.
  • Fresh eggs.

There are some foods that a person with Fibromyalgia should avoid:

  • Additives and sweeteners.
  • Refined flours.
  • Preserves.
  • Foods rich in oxalates (which cause crystals in the joints), such as spinach, chard or beetroot.
  • Foods rich in saturated fats: such as fatty meats, sausages, butter, full-fat dairy products, ice cream, fast food…
  • Foods rich in purine (which causes uric acid): animal offal, red meat and seafood.
  • Vegetables containing solanine (a toxin that acts on muscle-building enzymes, increasing inflammation and causing pain): tomato, potato, pepper, aubergine.
  • Alcohol, caffeine and salt and refined sugars, as they irritate the muscles and are stressful for the immune system.

What medications are most commonly used in fibromyalgia?

The rheumatologist is in charge of the treatment of fibromyalgia, as not all doctors are familiar with the subject.

These are the most commonly used and most successful medications to treat fibromyalgia:

Gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregablin) are drugs that are used for epilepsy (anticonvulsants) and work very well in fibromyalgia because they have an effect on neuropathic pain (they make neurons less active, thus relieving pain).
These are the most commonly used drugs to treat the disease. They work well in patients with or without depression, because they elevate chemicals in the brain such as serotonin and noradrenaline that are involved in pain modulation.
The goals of these are to relieve pain, there are several options. From paracetamol to opioids:

– The use of minor opioids such as tramadol combined with paracetamol has been effective against pain.

Anxiolytics such as diazepam may be given as supportive treatment if the person is anxious, as they relax the muscles, promote sleep and reduce anxiety.

What are the side effects of the most commonly used medications in fibromyalgia?

In cases of fibromyalgia, the person is more sensitive to the drugs, so experts recommend being very careful and taking small doses. They can have psychoactive effects.

Anticonvulsants can:

  • Make you sleepy
  • Dizziness and chronic fatigue.
  • Increase appetite
  • Promote weight gain.
  • Antidepressants can also cause dizziness.

What are the most common complaints in Fibromyalgia?

  • Pain and stiffness throughout the body.
  • Fatigue and tiredness.
  • Problems with thinking, memory and concentration (known as mental fog or “fogginess”).
  • Depression and anxiety.
  • Headaches, including migraines.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet.
    sleep problems

What dosage of CBD is suitable for Fibromyalgia?

Every body is different. And of course, every body tolerates the doses of CBD in our body differently. So we feel the effects of CBD differently.

We need to give the body constant doses so that the body changes.

And like in cancer for example, it automatically regenerates new cells and makes the oxidised cells, which are the ones that harm us, commit suicide. Another example is Huntington’s disease, which CBD will help to protect some of the nerve cells in the brain from wear and tear.

In general it is very beneficial for neurodegenerative diseases.

CBD Oil 20% Full Spectrum Canalanza (30ml), is one of the most valid options for Fibromyalgia pain relief.

The best dosage would be to take it 3 times a day. Just after waking up, before lunch and before going to bed. CBD oil is absorbed quickly.

The nighttime dose is the most important, as our body needs a good night’s sleep and rest. A good night’s sleep will make us feel better and more rested to face the day ahead.

The dosage varies depending on each body; as it is one of the degenerative diseases, it is recommended to take 5 drops before breakfast, 3 drops before lunch, and increase the dose at night for a good rest with 5-6 drops of CBD oil half an hour before or even at the moment of going to sleep.

What are the effects of CBD products on people with fibromyalgia?

Both cannabidiol (CBD) or medical cannabis and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are indicated for symptomatic relief in these patients.

While THC helps pain management and gives an analgesic effect.

CBD has anti-inflammatory effects that help manage symptoms at the musculoskeletal level.

We know that CBD oil has Cardiovascular properties, helps with blood pressure and protects the central nervous system (neuroprotective).

What side effects does CBD produce in people with fibromyalgia?

If we consume high doses of CBD it can have an anaesthetising effect, drowsiness. However, some individuals have reported diarrhoea, due to the relaxation that CBD oil produces on the muscles and the facilitation of bowel movements.
