CBD for Tourette’s Syndrome

Tourette’s syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder that usually manifests itself before the age of 18, and males are more likely to develop it. This disorder can develop as a result of hereditary causes (where it commonly presents in childhood) or as a result of other neuropsychiatric or neurological disorders such as ADHD, OCD, anxiety or depression.

It is characterized by tics at motor and phonic level, which can be transitory or chronic. Among the most common tics are eye blinking, coughing, throat clearing, sniffing, facial movements and other involuntary movements.

This disease is chronic and has no cure, however, it is not a degenerative disease, this means that the life expectancy of people is not affected at the time of developing this disorder, even, some people improve their symptomatic condition as they grow older.

The treatment for this syndrome, seeks to combat the symptoms that occur and also reduce a number of other side effects, which may be worse than the symptoms of the disease itself. The use of neuroleptics and antihypertensives can cause severe side effects, such as: muscle rigidity, drooling, tremors, lack of facial expression, slow movements, fatigue, depression, anxiety, weight gain, difficulty in thinking clearly and even lead to other disorders such as tardive dyskinesia.

On the other hand, trials carried out with CBD have shown it to have great power of action when it comes to alleviating symptoms related to involuntary movements, muscular and metabolic problems, depression, among others. Likewise, other trials state that there is scientific evidence indicating that CBD has a therapeutic value in some movement-related disorders thanks to the reduction of dyskinesia, some forms of tremor and L-DOPA-induced dystonia in Parkinson’s disease, and could contribute to the reduction of tics in Tourette’s Syndrome and hypokinetic parkinsonian syndromes.

In another pilot study conducted by the Department of Clinical Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Germany, observed 12 adults with Tourette’s syndrome being treated with CBD oil, and all showed significant improvement of tics, obsessive compulsive behavior (OCD), complex motor tics, motor tics, simple motor tics and vocal tics, this and other results led to the conclusion that: “the results obtained from this pilot study suggest that a CBD treatment is effective and safe for treating tics and OCD in Tourette’s syndrome.
