Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally able to speak is unable to speak in certain situations. SM is often associated with children, but if left untreated it can continue into adulthood. SM has recently been recognized as an anxiety disorder. Not only that, it is very little recognized, there is also not much medical research. It is suggested that selective mutualism runs in families, meaning that one or both parents have a history of anxiety.
Also, some symptoms include; withdrawal, difficulty maintaining eye contact, clumsiness, sensitivity to noise and crowds, excessive worry, trouble sleeping, and moodiness. The condition often goes undiagnosed due to the popular belief that a child’s shyness is temporary and will therefore grow out of it. If diagnosed, treatment focuses on behavior, including: shaping (achieving audible speech) and self-modeling to build self-confidence.
Research has shown that taking CBD for selective mutualism can dramatically improve anxiety. Cannabinoids promote embryonic and adult hippocampal neurogenesis and produce anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. THC activates all the cannabinoid receptors in the body. Creating a euphoric feeling and regulating the release of neurotransmitters that cause stress, anxiety, anger and depression. A large number of prescription drugs have many adverse side effects, however, THC has no observable negative effects in the treatment of these disorders. CBD decreases limbic system activity which decreases social anxiety.
