Strokes can happen without warning and the results can be devastating. There are two main types of strokes; ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic strokes are the most common, accounting for 87% of all strokes. Ischemic strokes occur when a blockage forms in the blood vessels that supply the brain. The brain is deprived of oxygen and nutrients and eventually causes brain cell death. If prolonged, it can cause serious brain damage or death. Hemorrhagic strokes occur when an artery supplying the brain ruptures and bleeds into the brain, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes are the leading cause of disability in the US Additionally, strokes cause 130,000 deaths a year in the US alone.
The key to stroke survival and damage prevention is time. Brain cells are highly sensitive and the brain can only survive without oxygen for six minutes. Treatment consists of two methods; tissue plasminogen tracer (TPA) and endovascular procedures. TPA aims to improve blood flow by dispelling the clot. Endovascular procedures involve inserting a catheter through an artery in the lower part of the body, to reach and remove the clot. Both treatments are most effective with 3-6 of the symptoms.
Cannabidiol can lead to recovery from ischemic stroke and other chronic diseases. It has powerful properties to increase cerebral blood flow, which helps prevent brain damage by ensuring that the brain receives enough oxygen and nutrients to restore normal function. CBD improves motor recovery after the onset of ischemic stroke. CBD appears to help the brain connect better with the muscles even after injury. Cannabinoids activate cannabinoid receptors and CBD is known to be neuroprotective, protecting nerve cells from degeneration. It could also help in the restoration of the cells and the structure of the nervous system.
Also, there is no tolerance when taking CBD, which means that CBD does not lose its effectiveness like other medications. Therefore, CBD can be used for long periods without losing its effectiveness. CBD is a naturally rich antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of molecules and counteracts oxidative stress. CBD prevents cell destruction and helps maintain overall health. Additionally, CBD can reverse damage and improve memory retention after a stroke. Some of the beneficial properties of CBD are: anti-ischemic, analgesic, anxiolytic, anti-proliferative, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and vasorelaxant.
